Patients make a visit to the doctor when they have niggling issues with their health. Some are more forthcoming with their issues and are open to talk about them in detail, while others don’t want to share their health concerns because it makes them look weak. As a doctor, I have met patients of both kinds. I have even met those who believe praying to God is enough to make the health issues disappear.
Irrespective of personal beliefs, when the health issue is minor, most individuals do not even take the first step to go to their doctor because they think it is okay to wait it out. But the truth is that a timely visit to the doctor is an important investment for your health. Regular examinations catch problems early, when they are more treatable. This is particularly important for older adults, as susceptibility to illness increases with age. … So it is always important to listen to your body closely and pay attention to your body’s needs. It is okay to feel weak, but it is not okay to ignore it. Altogether, regular doctor visits actually lower the overall health-care costs.
Some of this stems from the conditioning that we have gone through from our formative years. We are never taught to look within and listen to our body and find ways to repair it naturally.
On the other hand, we are often focused on the exterior and how people perceive us. We tend to be tuned into the materialistic things in our life that we take better care of them than we do of our own body. For example, all of us service our cars as soon as it completes its statutory kilometres. But how many of us reflect on the years of neglect that our body goes through?
Unless something goes really wrong, we all keep working and never think of servicing ourselves properly because we are not taught how to do it. Though we go for health check-ups occasionally, which in itself is wrong, we don’t follow instructions because we feel we are invincible.
As doctors, with the knowledge and experience gained over the years, we are able to treat many problems with the support of technology and available resources. Science has a lot of limitations. And doctors, too, are humans. So, it is very important for us as doctors to do the right thing for the patients without taking advantage of their situations. When they are expressing their physical weakness, they want to be heard and treated appropriately.
A good doctor is key in the well-being of a patient’s health. I believe in keeping a good relationship with all my patients forever. When I pray for myself and family, I include my patients, too, in those prayers. At the end of the day, a healthy patient is a happy story.
